The Stages of a Texas Hold'em Hand
Each hand of Texas Hold'em consists of four stages:
Stage 1: Preflop
Every player gets two cards each, known as their 'hole cards.' These cards are private, and only the player can use them to form their best possible poker hand.
Stage 2: The Flop
The dealer reveals three cards in the center of the table, which everyone can see. These cards serve as community cards, and all players can use them to create their hand.
Stage 3: The Turn
Another card is dealt in the center for everyone to use. Now, there are 4 communal cards that all players can leverage.
Stage 4: The River
The final card is dealt in the center, and now there are 5 cards that anyone can use a combination of their two hole cards and these communal cards to create their best five-card poker hand.
The Betting Rounds
During each stage, there's a betting round. Players move clockwise around the table from the first player to the dealer's left, each deciding how many chips they wish to wager. If a player ahead has made a bet, you must either match it (by putting in the same number of chips, called 'calling') or raise it (increasing the bet amount if you want to continue) when it's your turn. If not, you can fold, discarding your hole cards and waiting for the next round to start. If no one ahead of you has bet, you can check (bet 0 chips).
The Small Blind and Big Blind
Two forced bets, the small blind and big blind, are placed before the game starts to kick things off. The player immediately left of the dealer puts in the small blind, and the next player to the left puts in the big blind. These small contributions determine the stakes of the game, with the big blind usually being 1% of the game's standard buy-in amount. For example, if the small blind is $1 and the big blind is $2, the game is often referred to as a $1/2 game, and the typical buy-in would be around $200.
The Showdown: Who Wins?
Players can fold at any moment, so not every hand makes it to the end. If all but one player folds before the river and betting round, the remaining player takes the pot. If more than one player remains after the river and betting round, they reveal their hands (the showdown), and the strongest five-card poker hand wins.
